June 1960 AL Results

June was a very interesting month in the AL. NY started with a slight lead and went into a tailspin (for them) while Chicago was just rolling along in 2nd and played at a slightly better pace going 20-9 and watched the Yankees sink below them by going 15-14. Cleveland is keeping it interesting by matching the Yankees record and are 3 games behind 2nd place.

League Standings June

                           W   L Pct  GB
1960 Chicago 46 22 0.676  ---
1960 New York 40 25 0.615 4.5
1960 Cleveland 37 28 0.569 7.5
1960 Detroit 34 32 0.515 11
1960 Boston 33 34 0.493 12.5
1960 Baltimore 35 37 0.486 13
1960 Washington 25 40 0.385 19.5
1960 Kansas City 18 50 0.265 28

I tried playing with the Orioles to see why they are so far off their actual season pace (7 games) but they were too boring to stay with so I reverted to NY and Chicago. The Yankees and White Sox have a lot of interesting players and possibilities so I will stick with them for the balance of the season. Chicago can't be too far off their pennant winning 1959 season and have a lot more balanced team than the Yankees.

1960 Replay May AL League Leaders

When the month began, Roger Maris, the ultimate league MVP in 1960 had a decent batting average but zero homeruns. When the month ended, he was leading the league in HRs. Jimmy Piersall, Earl Battey, Pete Runnels and Tito Francona had very strong hitting months. Here is where we stand at this point...

1960 Replay May AL Team results

May was an interesting month in this replay. For the teams, the Yankees and the White Sox (the two teams I am actively managing in this otherwise Computer replay) are 5 or 6 games better than their actual performance while the Orioles are the team lagging the most. I will switch to actively managing the Orioles in June to see why this is so.
The top pitching performance was a 1 hitter by Bob Turley of the Yankees. The Yankees scored one run on a double followed by 3 walks. The lone hit was a fielding chance by the pitcher that was ruled a single. I have posted the box score as a separate blog entry.

Bob Turley 1 hits Washington

The only hit in this game came on a gb p x; which means it was up to Turley's fielding ability to resolve the at bat. in this case, a single. The hit came in the 4th inning so there was no end of game no-hit drama.

The powerhouse Yankees scored their run via a double followed by three consecutive walks. They had 3 hits for the game.

Wild game in 1960 Replay

The Yankees go up 6-0 by virtue of a single, double and triple by Mantle in the first four innings. An Allison HR cuts it to 6-1 but in the bottom of the 5th, Washington scores 7 times keyed by Allison's 2nd HR of the game, a Grand Slam this time, and immediately followed by a HR from Jim Lemon.

Down 8-6 the Yanks, squeaked together a run and that led to the top of the 9th rally. With one out, Clete Boyer got his sixth consecutive pinch hit and Gil McDougal hit a game winning two run HR.

1960 Baseball Replay - May NL update

This update will bring me current to my replay games completed. I have finished May for the NL and now will begin the AL May games. There was some significant changes and movements in the league during May.

You can see Pittsburgh had a great month going 18-9 while Milwaukee went 9-11. Not only do they now have a 5.5 game lead but they also have played 9 more games (approx 25%) which is why the "counting stats" like HRs are not fully balanced yet. It's interesting to see how Pittsburgh is only one game off their actual 1960 pace but the Giants area full 9 games off their 1960 pace and what should be a competitive race between the two teams, is not, yet. I have decided to play the Giants and the Pirates in June to see if that levels the results some. All the other teams are remarkably close to their actuals for 1960.

the League leaders changed a lot as more games were played and Strat's engine worked the statistics to bring in more normal results...

The amazing performance for the month overall goes to Tony Taylor who is now 3rd in batting and 4th in OPS. Strat's award voting places Willie Mays as the MVP for this first part of the season. Dick Groat is still having great success too.

On the pitching side, Vern Law has been the class of the league with 8 wins and a 1.92 ERA.
